Grammar from a Root

Root System

Most words grow from three-letter roots. From كتب (k-t-b, "to write") spring كتاب (book), مكتبة (library), and كاتب (writer).

Root & Pattern

Vowel patterns shape meaning: the pattern فاعِل signals the doer, while مفعول signals the receiver — a deeply logical, musical system.

Short Vowels

Short vowels are usually unwritten and inferred from context. The حركات (diacritics) are added in the Quran, poetry, and children's books for clarity.
